Can someone please post a good picture or give a description of the circuit diagram. I understand there is a protective resistor.. does this come before or after the diode??? thanks

It does not matter whether the resistor is before or after the diode, so long as the ammeter is in the series path and the voltmeter is placed across the diode and resistor combination.

The resistor is there only to protect the semiconductor from excess current which would otherwise destroy it.
