    do uni's only look at AS results?
    Say if I do badly this year, but get amazing results next year will it not matter?

    They will look at GCSE Maths, Science and English unless you have continued any of the three. They will look at AS results. Where you have bad AS results, they will look for evidence of improvement such as retakes. They will look for intelligence and passion in your personal statement to compensate a little for exam results. They will also judge you by your interview standard (if that applies), and as much as I'd hope they'd judge you by your attendance and effort in subject-specific open days, it seems unlikely.
