In Freud's study on Little Hans, Hans says 'I was in the bath and then the plumber came and unscrewed it. Then he took a big borer and stuck it in my stomach.' (part of Hans' plumber fantasy). But what actually is a borer?

A borer is a tool traditionally used by craftsman to create holes (e.g for pipework). The little lad would have apparently imagined being stabbed by that tool.
