Morrisons - Is this a good cover letter?

Hi,

Although I have no work experience at the moment, I am applying for Morrisons, a food retailer. Could you guys critique/comment on my cover letter? Thanks!

Dear Sir/Madam:

Re: Store Assistant

I am writing to apply for the above position, as advertised in your St. Helens store.

I am a 17 year old student, studying full-time at college, and I am looking to start a career within food retail. Morrisons, in particular, appeals to me over other leading food retailers due to its constant busy, energetic and customer focused atmosphere, which I believe is the ideal environment to work in and to have the opportunity to grow as an employee.

Although, I currently have no experience within retail, I know that working for Morrisons, will give me the opportunity to fulfill my potential, whilst offering me a challenging, yet exciting career, giving me an insight into how a successful food retailer works.

I believe I am very much suitable for this role, as I am very focused, energetic, and above all pleasant. I am very hard-working, and enjoy being on my feet and being kept busy, which is why a career in retail appeals to me so much. Additionally, I have always enjoyed working as part of a team, or using my initiative to work individually; High School has giving me the opportunity to explore these both, such as being a Prefect and Head Boy. These roles have giving me an insight into true leadership and the skills that are required. Equally as important, they have shown me how to communicate ideas effectively - Which is vital for any employee working in a fast-paced, customer focused environment.

As you can see from my CV, I also had a 2 week work placement as an Administrative Assistant. This position showed me what it is like to work under-pressure in a fast-paced work environment; this I enjoyed a great deal, which is why I feel working for Morrisons would be ideal for me.

Availability

I am hoping to work part-time around 16-20 hours per week. I am very flexible with hours, and due to living close to the store, travelling there and back would not prove problematic. During college term, I can work Monday-Friday 16.00 + and any given time on a weekend. As summer is approaching, I would also be able to do overtime, if needed.

I hope I have highlighted some of my skills further to support my application and to why I believe I am suitable for this position.

I look forward to hearing from you soon, with any further questions you may have.

Yours faithfully,

Honestly, I'd say just the fact that you've done a cover letter should appeal. None of my friends wrote a cover letter for their jobs, they either just handed in their CV as it is or filled out the stores application form. I've had no luck with that though, so I'm about to resort to writing hundreds of cover letters in the hope of making a better impression :P I'll be sure to take any advice anyone has to offer, too, haha.

Good luck

Do not start it Dear Sir/Madam! Find out the name of the store manager, or whoever deals with recruitment, and address it to them. It will just get binned otherwise.

And check your grammar. You have far too many commas. You can't just stick them wherever you want to. Shorten your sentences if necessary. In fact, shorten your sentences anyway. I counted one, and it had over 50 words. That's ridiculous.

Agreed with the correct use of commas, but I think it's a good letter and the actual content has got its strengths. I also doubt a lot of people would use c.letters to apply for jobs which use application forms so it will put you above others.

Good luck!!
