Finger Sucking and hair twiddling

Hey, I know there had been a thread about thumbsucking already but this is different and I really need help and support

Basically for as long as I have known I have sucked my index finger and played with my hair such as twiddling creating knots ect.

I am now 16 years old, I am male and it is really embarrassing and immature in my opinion, I only do it in complete privicy, such as watching TV on my own or sleeping, I really want to stop but I can't I feel I am addicted and can't break the addiction.

Just for extra info I think I do it as a comfort thing it relaxes me and I enjoy it, but it's not what a 16 year old boy should be doing and also it use to cause baldniss, it kinda does to my fringe but not too bad. I really really want to stop but it's difficult can anyone offer me advice please!

Cut your hair, dip your finger in something that tastes really, really, really bad. Sorted.

Well as long as you don't do it infront of people whats the big deal?

Get some stuff that they use to stop people from biting their nails, put it on your fingers, suck no more.

Because if he does it in his sleep then in a couple of years he'll be asleep with some girl who will turn over, see him sucking his finger, scream and then run for her life. Obv.

People do weird things in their sleep though... can't say I'd be bothered.

just say to yourself "right, i'm immature and need to stop" that's what i did about sucking my thumb!! i sucked it 24/7 apart from when i was with my friends. i'm going to uni and really had motivation to stop.
for a couple of days i put a plaster on and it's now been more than 2 months and i still have temptations but i know it's not worth it!!!

all you need is motivation and you'll be able to do it, you have to treat it like an addiction.
When I was little I use to suck my thumb. It's quite a hard habit to lose. My mom wrapped tape around BOTH my thumbs, but that didn't work. So then she put vaseline on BOTH my thumbs, and I stopped for the night. After that I just stoped. I was like 9 or 10. If you really want to stop the habit, you must really WANT to stop the habit.

For the hair thing, cut your hair, obviously.
And as for the finger sucking, what stopped me sucking my thumb was that eventually it made my teeth stick out so much I needed braces, and then with the plastic bit at the roof of my mouth I couldn't actually fit my thumb in.... although maybe the threat of that happening to you might be enough of an incentive
Awww lol, I think that's kinda cute  lol. I used to suck my finger but stopped in the infant school 'cause a teacher told me off... grrr... I think now you either have to just stop yourself, or, if it's that bad, live with it. It's okay, really.

i still suck my thumb, im 18. i only really do it when im bored or sleeping. but if im watch tv not at home i dont know what to do with my hand and my mouth kinda waters like ive got mt thumb in my mouth... its odd, i probaby will stop one day but its just habit really. like someone else said if you only do it in private, whats the problem?
My cousin is 18 n still sucks her thumb. My brother also use to suck his thumb but he's grown out of it.

I guess you'll grow out of it or try dipping your thumb in something that tastes nasty - might help you to break the addiction.

As for the hair twiddling, im 21 and still do it. I do it when im watchin the tv, bored or thinkin about a billion things on my brain at the time. Nothing bad by it, personally.

I wasn't allowed to suck my thumb when I was little so I don't know how to break that habit. But I don't think there's anything wrong with twiddling your hair. I do it if I'm bored, tired, thinking. My mam does it too, maybe it's genetic!
what's baldniss?
Anyway, I don't see why it's a major problem for you. You said you do it in privacy, we all do stuff when we're alone. It's like biting ya nails, I do it, I try to stop, but it's never successful. Just try and fiddle with something if you have the urge to suck your finger or touch your hair...start flicking a pen or something like that..
I do the same to my hair, altho mainly when im tired or stressed. ive been trying to do other silly things like playing with a rubics cube that keeps both hands busy to stop myself. My boyfriend thinks its cute but its really ruining my hair and i cant stop, ive tried before, so i understand how hard it is and why its a problem for you. Im actually considering going to the doctors or to a hypnotist and seeing what they advise. I know that sounds pretty extreme but it depends how much you want to stop and how much damage youre causing. For me, im worried about giving myself a bald patch...which im pretty certain isnt a good look for a 17 year old girl. Good luck xx
