Personally, this is how I would put it:

A predominant area of interest were match reports because they were an effective medium to compare differences in how the referees were depicted for each match across the four newspapers.

I would use portrayed. The definition of this is to describe someone in a particular way, so that seems right.

I'm writing a dissertation on football referees and the media. I read loads of newspaper articles and i classified them into either positive, negative or neutral. What I've written is:

Match reports were the predominant area of interest because they were an effective medium to compare if there was a difference in how the referees were reported/represented/presented/portrayed.depicted for each match across the four newspapers.

    1) Which word should I use - reported/represented/presented/portrayed.depicted?
    2) Is the general English (grammar, punctuation etc) for the rest of the sentence good? How would you improve it?
Why is this in chat forum?

Why is this in chat forum?
I didn't know which section to put this in so i saw 'chat' as almost like the 'other' section when it doesn't apply to any of these parts of the forum
