What are the odds you'll get accepted? What exactly goes on during the admission process?

If a supervisor agrees to take you on, there's a pretty high chance you'll get accepted, assuming you meet most of the application standards. If you don't, and the supervisor really likes you, a method will be figured out somehow.

Getting the support of prospective supervisor can only help your chances of acceptance. How much this helps will depend on the individual department and on how much influence they have. If they're relatively junior, then it could be a minor factor. If they'e senior, probably more. Admissions processes will vary between unis and even departments within unis. Very difficult to say, really.

However, if you're not applying for a funded PhD (which I assume, as it's your own project) then getting funding will be the bigger issue. You can have your project accepted and be offered a place, but that won't auomatically come with funding. That might be a different kettle of fish.
