They tend to supply the textbooks. However, I think if you do something like English, (I studied something else) you may have to buy the reading books. But for most courses, they supply the textbooks you need. Some of the course materials are now mostly online.

I've had to buy an economics dictionary before, and you do have to buy any stationery and notebooks to use.

The OU will supply textbooks, specialist academic software (so you'll need to buy Word if you want it, but they will supply SPSS if your course requires it), and tutor support. There's also access to academic journals online through Athens and JSTOR, and you can gain access to other university libraries if you want to visit and borrow materials.

I think the OU is great. You do have to be motivated in order to do well, as it is distance learning. Your tutor will support you but won't nag you to get work done.

Do you agree with the PM's proposal to cut tuition fees for some courses?
