Returning home from uni at weekends to keep a job??

Basically I've just started at Sainsbury's part time and I'm happy with everything but come September I plan to go away for uni but really don't fancy the whole process of looking for work again especially as it'll be out of London and harder to find a job and I was told Sainsburys don't do transfers for your first 6 months. I have heard of people travelling home every weekend so do you think it'd be wise and manageable to return to London (maybe from as far as Manchester or Leicester) every weekend to keep my job as I cant face not having a job again (It already took me 2 years to find this one lol

no! you'll be tired from your uni week, trains aren't reliable and it'll cost you a fortune or it won't be worth it as your wages will be going into buying your train tickets all the time. best thing to do is register with loads of agencies around your uni area in august, let them know when you start uni, set a date when you'll be able to start attending interviews in your uni area, and let them know what you're looking for etc.

It sounds like a terrible idea to me. I couldn't imagine having a job at all at University - I'm far too busy - and although I know that at most places it's normal for people to have a job, you really won't want to travel any significant distance. Getting to London from Manchester takes a long time and is massively expensive, you'll have work (for your course) that you need to do at the weekend, and the chance of a social life or doing any activities if you're travelling that far seems next to zero.

Finding a new job really shouldn't be that hard - Manchester and Leicester will have plenty of jobs. Being outside of London certainly doesn't make it impossible to get a job - I doubt anyone in the country travels as far as Manchester to London for a job in a supermarket!

Why cant you just transfer the job you already have to your uni location? And use your holidays / unpaid time off to come home at the weekends sometimes?

I don't think it'd be worthwhile at all. All the money you'd be earning would be spent on train fare! Plus you'd get sick of travelling each weekend.

I'm sure if you really really tried, you could find a job.

Once you've found out which Uni you're going to, how about you take a trip upto the town/city a couple weeks before going to uni, and look for any vacancies? Get in before all the other students!

Well sainsburys DO offer transfers, theres posts around here about them and at least one TSR member does this. I'll have a look and see what i can find.

Murpheysmoment. and andy5788 are two people i've found that have managed to transfer so you could PM one of those and ask how it works.

I couldn't transfer as there was not a JL in Derby where I came to uni. I didn't fancy coming back every weekend and the thought of working during my first year sucked. :p: So I gave it up. However, many of my friends who worked there come back for weekends but they don't live that far from home so its not too bad.

as mentioned, travelling from manchester to london for a job in sainsburys is such an insane idea.

Yeah it does sound a bit much to travel so far but my friend knows a guy who travels home from Bristol to London every weekend for his job in Argos and I know another girl who used to go home from London to Manchester to take her washing home to her parents:eek: I guess it's just a case of how desperate you are...cos I know I won't find money from anywhere else. I'll attempt to find a job wherever I go but if not I'll have to put up with it...at least until the first 6 months is up and I can transfer.

www.nationalrail.co.uk - Manchester to London leaving on a Fri night and returning on Sun night - cheapest fare available = £59.60

Even with a railcard that's still £40 = 8 hours on minimum wage

you're mental!

ok I've decided I won't be doing that anymore. Thinking about it, it would be a bit impractical all over:biggrin:

Or how short of common sense and money-rich you are  Those people are either idiots or mummy and daddy paid for it all. If you don't fall into either category, which you don't having seen your decision not to bother, then it's a waste.

Yeah most unis have workbank/job centre type affairs. You could even work in the student union, about 4 of my mates do.

But at least after working with Sainbury's for a couple of months, you'll have a little more experience, so hopefully it will be easier to find another job. I know people who go home every weekend (for work or just for the sake of it). Unless you live close to the uni, it's not very practical on a time or a financial level. I know sometimes it can be a struggle to find a job, but I don't see the point of commuting every weekend for work, before even having tried to find a job close to uni.
