That idea is just too much as opposed to honesty. How unreasonable is his crush that she'd not accept it was a simple mistake.
I think that's quite naive to assume she would react maturely to the truth.
Considering OP is embarrassed by the situation as it is, I don't think they would want to risk further embarrassment if the girl turns out to be a bitch and tells the truth to everyone she knows at the school.
Who knows? If the girl and OP later become friends, then maybe she could tell the truth then.
