nice one, a masters is good - there will be a lot of good employment opportunities once you have graduated! and very good money also! also the boy that is applying to do elecs at southampton was ex deputy head boy, not that, that matters his name is ollie

surely the reputation of the university is far more important than the quality of teaching/department? Personally, if there was any time left i would choose Gimperial

not at all- the people who employ graduates in a subject will know which are the best unis in that field. going to a place just for reputation is just silly if you're not going to get taught as well so are more likely to drop out/do not that much work/don't understand it so get a lower degree. i think the main criteria for choosing a uni is where you will be happy regardless of how good a reputation it has you have to live and work there for 3/4 years.

but the only reason he/she gave for choosing Southampton was the superior departmental rating. Im sure you could have fun and be happy at any top class uni - but maybe im wrong

yeh of course you can. but you may be happier at a lesser one- people seem to forget that sometimes. i think she/he should choose whichever one s/he prefers the feel of and forget about statistics

To be honest, short of withdrawing and reapplying next year, there isn't much you can do about it. You made a choice, so there must have been a strong case for you personally to opt for Soton. go for it.
