I'm trying to figure out wheather I'd better apply for an accomodation King's Manor or in a college

I'm guessing you're applying for a postgrad course?

Kings' Manor houses the Medieval Studies research centre among others and is situated in the city centre. Beautiful, atmospheric old building with a quiet library that inspires you to work. I can't comment on computer or other facilities.

But King's manor does not have accommodation. Most of the uni accommodation & the colleges are situated on the main campus (20 minutes walk, short bus/bike ride away). there is some post-grad accommodation half way between the uni and town and a few residences closer to King's manor http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/accom/gsp/cityprop.htm.

Personally, I think you will potentially meet more people/find more to do by living on campus. The trade off is that it's less convenient for King's Manor - but how much time will you be spending in the department anyway?
Wherever you live, you will be a member of one of the colleges (they are loosely based on the Oxbridge model, with the idea that you belong to a smaller community than the uni as a whole).

Undergraduates don't get to choose their college/accommodation (just express preference for length of let/ensuite etc). this may not be true for postgrads though.

hope that helps

Wentworth is the post-grad college, so if you applied for uni accommodation you would most likely be placed there (I think there are a FEW exceptions - we had a post-grad on our corridor my first term in Vanbrugh, but I think it's very rare) or as previously suggested, you could look for a shared house to rent with other ppl

I study in the Kings manor (archaeology). It has to my knowledge 2 computer rooms, both due an upgrade this year, a common room, a library, a cafeteria called the Refractory which sells the worlds most odd sandwiches and a very nice coffee machine which costs 30p downstairs in the cellar next to the horse skeleton (it did cost 15p but someone stole it a while ago =( ). To be fair though despite my department being actually based there i still do have many lectures on the campus itself, however Kings manor does have everything you need, all the accommodation is on campus which does make early lectures a major annoyance for me (lectures start at 9:30 there to compensate), any other questions just ask away.

Thank you all for the info, it was really useful..today I've sent the request for accomodation and my preferences were Constantine house and Catherine house (both in the city center) and college accomodation as third choice.

I thought it was useful being near King's Manor..

Gargh misrepresentation, your accommodation isn't in the city centre, Catherine House is on the edge of campus and closer to campus than Fairfax is!

ohh. I'm having a similar problem. I'm applying to a postgrad in York. I can't decide where to live. I went to visit York last weekend (I flew over from abroad) and I really didn't like the campus. I'm not really used to campus accommodation I go to Trinity in Dublin, and it seemed claustrophobic. I will have lectures in King's Manor. I was thinking about applying to the houses too. I was thinking it would be good to be between Uni and city. Does anyone have any experience of living in these houses? Also do these/college accommodation have internet access for my laptop?

I read on the accomodation booklet that the rooms outside of the unversity campus don't provide the SNS service, but then again, in the cost details it maintains that, for example in Constantine house (where I applied), the price includes SNS...that seems a little confused. That's an issue I'm interested in too, because I want to find a way to connect my laptop from my own room.
However, what are you going to study? I'm going for an MA in Medieval English Literature.

The whole info about SNS is very confusing. It is pretty much essential I have an internet connection in my room as I use Skype at moment to contact all of my loved ones all over the world and when I move from Ireland that will become even more important. In fact I'm not even sure that SNS will support Skype. My uni only allowed access this year. I find the SNS thing a bit confusing. I go to Trinity and while they do have a network it isn't very restrictive, obviously no downloading, but they have wireless pretty much all over campus. The SNS thing seemed to imply you couldn't connect to it with your own laptop, am I wrong? All of this would be a significant problem for me. Oh yes and to answer your question I applied to do Renaissance and Early Modern Studies. I've said yes but there's still a possibility I'll go to Durham. It's proving a really hard choice! Other accomodation issues for me are whether I have a full kitchen, a grill won't cut it- I love to cook! I can live with shared facilities. I'd quite like somewhere secure to park my bike. When I was in York they had these shed things and they looked like a really good idea. I wasn't sure if the houses e.g. Constantine etc. had these?

Hi Malally, actually I don't know whether there are parking facilities for bikes at the houses, but anyway, we're talking about buildings run by the university itself, so I guess they're all well equipped to meet students needs. I'm pretty sure there's a shared kitchen at Constantine and Catherine House but the internet problem still remains.
I use MSN Messenger to keep in touch with my loved ones and that surely knocks off a lot from the telephone bill... however, I found this page about the SNS service at York, you might want to take a look at it http://www.sns.york.ac.uk/

Chances of constantine house having SNS are very low, the SNS runs through a 10MB copper connection which I think they have only just run to fairfax house which has a lot more rooms in than the other small ones. At the same time it may have standard BT sockets in rather than the rubbishness of dog'n'bone.

If you got on campus then SNS does allow Skype through, its not really that restrictive as long as you dont plan on doing online gaming or p2p.

Yes you can plug your own laptop in, thats the whole point of the SNS. There is free wireless scattered around campus as well, it has a different acronym which I can't remember right now, search on the york site for eduroam and you will get it!

For the record Kings Manor is further than a 20 minute walk from campus, takes at least 25mins to get into town itself then Kings Manor is a good 10mins on top of that, takes me 12 to get from Piccadilly to Micklegate!
