    Hi, was doing some past papers today and don't understand what it means when it says 'penalise sticks'.
    Could someone please explain this

    It is an interesting turn of phrase. I believe they are referring to skeletal notation. When it is asking for the displayed formula, you have to show ALL bonds including the O-H (my students always miss this one!)

    The only other explanation is for those people who occasionally draw the bond but don't add the hydrogen atom on.
