Appearances: Effeminate Men vs Viking/Terrorist watch

There seems to be a big contrast in society now of men growing their hair long and looking slim and then the polar opposite of men trying to look like Vikings or Terrorists.

So what are people's opinions on this? Should men look as manly as possible or should appearances not be so important to us? What I mean is, if there is an ideal masculinity, is appearance a part of its definition?

I have noticed that the most masculine-looking people tend to be very weak by modern standards. For example they are useless with technology, they have small bank balances and they aren't good at their jobs. Whereas stereotypically gay looking men tend to be hypermasculine by modern and non-visual standards. It seems that the people who put effort into appearing a certain way have exact opposite behaviour. It's almost as if men who achieve things are comfortable enough with their lives to incorporate femininity into their ego, whereas men who don't achieve things have a veil of masculinity to protect them from ridicule.

It also translates into the voice because the more effeminate-looking someone is then usually the more soft and gentle their voice is. Whereas the bearded folk tend to hardly communicate at all and seem to be thinking more about chasing mammoths when they are in social situations.

Please let me know if you have noticed something similar. Note: this mainly applies to people in their 20's atm.
