    Which documents are lost?

They are lost now, your chance of getting them back are almost zero.

You need to make a claim against the post office to cover he cost of replacing the documents.
You need to go about getting replacements, although you dont state what they are.

    She doesnt know her number?
Her number remains constant. Presumably theres a reason she needs to use her maiden name? I suggest contacting HMRC and taking their advice. I doubt its as big a problem as you think and they will be able to send you the details, which you can then forward to the passport office.

    Phone NI General enquiries.

Im afraid the documents are almost certainly lost. Contact HMRC on that number and take their advice., they might even issue a new one.

Who can say what happened? you need to take that part yp with the post office. be sure to tell them it was securely sealed and the postmaster wouldnt have accepted the package if it wasnt. With impornta packages I tend to use parcel tape on the ends of the envelope so you cna see if its been tampered with.

    Your taks are.

    1. HMRC for the NI.
    2. Send new details to Passport people.
    3. make a claim on the post office, plys get them to investigate.

it's not the Post Office. It's Royal Mail you need to contact.

Btw the amount of money you cna claim on recorded delivery is very small 6 first class stamps and then you have to prove up to £50 loss. It will be useful for tracking, but I'd regard the documents as lost.
Talk to HMRC this morning and they will sort it out for you.

I'm sorry this happened to you. In future I recommend scanning or photographing all your important documents (this will of course not protect the originals but gives you some record) and paying for recorded delivery when your dealing with important docs.

If you struggle to make any headway with HMRC just to let you know that they are notoriously hard to deal with and be persistent!

I worked for the PO and you can only claim if you sent it via special delivery. Recorded unfortunately will only get you a book of stamps as compensation or something. If you sent it sealed then it's royal mail you need to take the issue up with.
