    Was doing a paper and on one of the questions they asked for the difference between cr3+ and cr2+ ions. This was the answer (attached)

    But I was jus wondering. Won't they both form hydrogen ions and polarise water - not jus cr3+ right?

    Cr3+ has a much higher charge density, so when it forms its hexaaqua complex ion, one of the water molecules if polarised sufficiently so that a H+ pops off.

    ahhh right but they both polarise the water molecule right?

    Yes, but Cr3+ does it more, in fact sufficiently so that H+ pops off, making Cr3+(aq) acidic enough to react with Na2CO3 making CO2.
