    If H has an oxidation state of +1, wouldnt it be

    +1+1 + Br = 0

    +2 + Br = 0

    Therefore wouldn't Br's oxidation no. be -2?

    Ignore the preceding 2 when you work out oxidation states.

    Anyway, the 2 would also relate to the Br, so your logic should have been:

    +1+1 + 2Br = 0

    +2 + 2Br = 0

    Therefore Br's oxidation no. be -1?
