Edexcel Maths S1 (5th June) - How'd it go?

^^^
Surely its 12 hours passed.

I thought it was pretty easy, well atleast easier than like all the past papers. I did pretty much all the questions, except the normal distribution questions, which now i come to think of it, wasn't actually hard on the paper. damn if only i had like 5 more mins! I think i missed out like 16 marks (i counted @ the end), which if true, i would get like 79% which would really suck, cuz 80% is A.

And What did u all put for the 'name a instrument' question? I asked other people and apparently i read it wrong, cuz i put 'recorder' cuz i thought it asked to name a lightweight instrument. Can anyone remember the wording of the question and post it?

So how did all of you find it?

Hey guys, what did you think of the paper?

how random was the question on what musical instrument would you chose?

I could not get the normal distribution of that question, but then realised how to do it just as i left the hall, As you do...

The Venn diagram was difficult, i thought.

And the last normal distribution question where 20<x<D i could not understand. I knew that the probability that x>20 = Ф0 = 0.5 ... but i couldnt get further.

I didn't really like it....

More light hearted... what musical instrument did u put down? I said it was a harp

hey dude,

well it was good, but I kinda was puzzled on the last part of the question about the orchestra........how do you find variance from quartiles?? I was totally baffled!

Another problem was the question regarding the histogram and the swimmers! everything was ok except for the part which asked for standard deviation! I got a mean of something like 62.675 and the value of "sigma fxsquared" as 41033 but the variance was coming negative, which meant i couldnt get a value for standard deviation ! :frown: This also meant that i couldnt do the last part regarding skewness!

I'd like to know what everyone else got as mean for the histogram question!

Otherwise, all in all, a good paper! However, if i had done the initial question more faster, i could have looked into the standard deviation question more better and found the correct answer!

Regarding your question in the orchestra, it was somewhat like this:
Explain what the + denotes, and suggest what instrument the musician may have been carrying.

Since this outlier was 90kg, I had put the instrument as an organ!
I thought it was an OK-ish paper actually. A lot easier than the previous papers. I probably got the normal distribution one where you had to find D wrong (I got 20.36 as the final answer). And by the way, I put a grand piano as my answer for the instrument  Dont know if I would get the mark, though. My only other concen is that for one of the questions (regression one I think) it asked for your answers to 1 decimal place. I totally couldnt see that, and pt it to 5 d.p. All in all, not a bad paper, could have been a lot worse.

I thought it was much harder than most S1 papers, but I think it went ok.

The normal distribution with quartiles on first question was just:

For a normal distribution, mean = mode = median = 45kg

Upper quartile is such that 75% of the data lie below it. The upper quartile was like 54kg. So

phi(54-45/SD) = 0.75

And you just had to solve that and using interpolation from the percentage points table gave 13.2 and using interpolation on the normal table gave 13.3 according to some people I talked to.

As for the outlier, I could only think of a cello. But I thought a cello was called an oboe for some reason and put that down! What an idiot. I think piano would have been a good answer.

Mean on histogram I got as 18.91.

I pretty much ran out of time too, writing till the last second.
What was the normal distibution answer where you had to find D?

I did the same using the lower quartile, using that value and saying that 25% of the data was below it. I cant remember what my answer was though

I think it was something like 27.8!

I've never heard about that formula!

Could you please mention what formula it is? quite baffled!

27.something sounds right.
TBH, I thought it was a good paper. I was expecting a lot worse.

It's like...the whole normal distribution thing. Phi is that Greek symbol that's like an I with an o in the middle. The stuff in the middle is meant to be the z value and the right hand side is the probability p. I'd love to give a proper explanation but my chemistry exam is like in 1.5 hours so I better get going!

kk no probs just post it here after you finish!

Good luck for your chemistry exam!
And how the heck did everyone get mean 18.91 for the histogram question??

I kept trying and trying and checking my answer but it just wouldnt come!

I got 'Sigma fx' as 62675...........x is supposed to be the mid point of the class right??
Where it said "the information from the previous page has been copied to help you" was written i thouhgt that was really good so that you didnt have to keep flicking over the page to get the values.

To show my appreciation i wrote THANK YOU and a massive heart with edexcel in the middle. Hopefully my words will gain some sympathy marks to bring up marks lost on that bloody venn diagram

regarding the normal distribution question.......

you first convert the 20 and D to the Z format.......and then you get the Z value of 20 as 0.5000 (as you mentioned) and then you add it to 0.3614 (or whatever the number on the RHS of the equal sign was) and then you find the number whose Z value is (0.5000 + 0.3614)........it comes to something like 1.84 or something..........and then you multiply 4 and add 20 and it comes to a value near 26.8!

ROFL! It was thoughtful but I done (a) on the previous page so it didn't really help.

Overall, I thought the paper was okay, I had D1 afterwards so I think I was more worried about that.

Can't remember much of the answers. I got 27.something for d too though and put double bass for instrument. That question was really strange, it put people who are clueless at music at a disadvantage, but meh, only one mark.

 wow i cant believe that you had time to actually draw a heart with edexcel in the middle!! :P:P

I thought that was great too but then you turn to the histogram question and they don't give you the information again! That's when you had to turn over the most as well (or at least I did).
The above is true... You would think that if they did it for one they would do it for the other? Words fail me with edexcel, they are rather laughable at times.

Maybe they were testing which one was better. Probably had ppl outside some centres handing out customer satisfaction forms with the question "Did you find that the re-print of information on page 7 usefull, compared to the non-re-print on page 11?"
