Meditation can actually be extremely beneficial. It basically allows one to disconnect from the mind for a while and enter into a silent conscious state (like the one you feel just before sleep), leaving behind all your stresses, worries, insecurities etc...
Meditating in a nice location on a nice day is magical but it does require patience and practice.
There are meditation group sessions (google around your area) which can help get you started

    For how long?
Depending on how bad in a state I am. It can be 3 mins or ten mins or more.

There's an app I use to help.

I got into it because I had to learn how to get myself out of negative places. I couldn't rely on a therapist because it's not like I can go see them everyday.
Future medic answered the rest. Lol.

I put my earphones in and listen and to what the meditator says. Sometimes I feel like I'm being hypnotised.

How do you actually go about meditating? I sit there for a bit, try to control my breathing, but it just feels like I'm sitting there breathing. I don't feel relaxed or anything, then I get bored.

Is this what you were like when you started, or do you think I'm doing it wrong?

I use an app. The voice comes in and tells you what to do. It's very relaxing. After a while you wouldn't need the app again.

Yep. It's very nice. Unfortunately I only use it when I'm in a bad state of mind. Kind of like how religious people use praying.
