Smoking

Hi, I'm doing a project on Smoking. As a non-smoker I'd appreciate some information for it:

1) What age did you start smoking?
2) Why did you start?
3) On average, how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?
4) Which brand of cigarette do you smoke a day?
5) How long do you go between cigarettes?
6) Current age

Thanks for your help!

1) Never. Not even think about that.
2) Have never found a reason to start with.
3) No cigarrettes a day.
4) No brand, because no cigarattes.
5) I don't smoke cigarettes for 31 years.

Yeah, you are right, I am a non-smoker and that is a good feeling.

but 15 a day has got to be around £100 a week. That's a whole week's rent.

Your maths are way off a pack of 20 is 10 pounds and I smoke about 10 a day so that's more like 40 a week.

Regardless I'm not a normal student living in a shared house I'm 32 in a couple of weeks and share a nice house with my partner

1) What age did you start smoking?
16

2) Why did you start?
It was sociable.

3) On average, how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?
Now I just have 1 or 2 to suppress the symptoms of my bowel disease but at the most maybe 10.

4) Which brand of cigarette do you smoke a day?
Anything menthol. At the moment JPS click.

5) How long do you go between cigarettes?
24 hours usually. If I'm with friends that smoke maybe I will have more but not more than one an hour.

What on earth was the point in replying to a questionnaire that specifically asks for smokers?

Ok if you're established than that's affordable I guess.

The increased marketing at festivals is an interesting topic, the same 2-3 brands (someone else will have to help me here, but I know B&H was the main purchase for most people - I think they had Pall Mall too, and something else?) were at all of them. They launched the B&H dual (menthol clicks) at festivals, bringing it into stores, and I know it's got me buying far more straights (B&H dual only). They combined the summer launch with a pretty vibrant pack, clearly targeted at the younger markets (see image below).

I saw a huge amount of B&H dual packs around, and at many festivals they were providing free portable ashtrays too. There's always a monopoly at festivals, with one cigarette stall run by the festival spread throughout the site, always the same brands, across all festivals. Iirc, they were fairly cheap for a festival too (probably as a semi loss-leader to get people smoking their brand).

Here's the summer pack (note the metallic silver too, metallic colours aren't often used due to cost, but they're a good marketing aid, as is the sliding mechanism, requiring less effort to get at a new cigarette, increasing smoking rates - festivals are often where smoking rate dramatically increases, see my post here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=62361453&postcount=13):

Just to show the thread starter there are non-smokers too. Could be that he has a prejudice against TSR members after this questionnaire.

4) Which brand of cigarette do you smoke a day? Benson & Hedges Silver
5) How long do you go between cigarettes? Depends, 45 mins - 1hr 1/2

Don't start smoking as it's really hard to stop when you start

Really useful to have all of the data so far, and if anyone else wants to respond to the questions or simply has any other views, opinions or experiences about smoking in general then that would be really useful as the more info I can get the better!!!!
I would add a current age to your questionnaire as the age to start smoking has changed.

It was 16 when I started and now it's 18 so I wouldn't expect smokers to start as young as people did in my day

Good point, can you think of any other ideas for questions?
question for people who started younger than 18, how did you manage to get the cigarettes? do your parents know and how did they react
