US suicide rate surges, particularly among white people

The suicide rate in the US has surged to its highest level in almost three decades, according to a new report.

The increase is particularly pronounced among middle-age white people who now account for a third of all US suicides.

why has the suicide rate increased so much? and why for particularly uneducated whites?

    Coincidence?

That figure is double the combined suicides total for all blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaska Natives.
Surely that difference is too high for it to be coincidence.

Probably a combination of unemployment for those generally uneducated, bad economic times and ageism causing depression

    Cannot think of a reason
I would argue that it's a number of reasons that have led to this. For example, the U.S. has a real problem with dealing with mental and physical health issues. Combine this with growing financial stress and access to narcotics and you'll see a real surge in suicide.

It's already happening here (at least the unemployment bit if you're middle aged, even if you're educated.) My mother has a 2:1 in theology from Manchester University and a PGCE with good experience to back it up and she can't get a job doing anything anywhere. Schools won't take her on because they prefer NQT's which cost less and most menial jobs won't because she's too overeducated. The job market in the UK is abysmal

I have to agree but she is still educated, sure she might be down. But i think she's smart enough to bounce back, best of luck to her. Although i do agree the job market is a joke.
