My friend recently got an essay back and was accused of plagiarism. She told me the lecturer used a tool called Turnitin. I didn't know lecturers did this. Purely out of interest I submitted my own essay from last term into Write Check to see if it had gone through Turnitin database. I received a 21% match. However, I would have thought it would be higher as its the exact same version of the essay. What does this mean?

Probably just that your essay hasn't been uploaded to their database yet (or they're using a tool like writecheck - obviously, if you can test your own papers there, making them then part of the database would be a huge flaw, as when you handed it in it'd come up as 100% plagiarised). All non-plagiarised papers should match a bit, due to people writing on the same topic using similar references. The ones with very low match scores are the ones that have tried beating the system.

I think Writecheck is just for students as far as my concerned. Does this mean my unit may not use Turnitin/have uploaded essays yet (it was back in October)?

If you're in uni, they'll almost certainly be using Turnitin. But it may be there's a delay before it gets uploaded to the Turnitin servers - any professor should be able to recognise two people handing in the same assignment on one day.
