    Firstly, your GCSEs are not "poor" especially if you have extenuating circumstances.

    Secondly, if you are on target to meet or exceed "top universities" typical offer requirements then you can be a competive applicant.

    I think you are a very competitive applicant, especially for universities that don't care too much about GCSE's, like Cambridge.

    I agree with jneill's comments. however I would like to add that places like the 3 you mention reject more people than they accept so there is a high possibility for rejection for ANYONE applying for these universities. There are many good universities outside of these that you would be more likely to get in including the likes of Exeter, Lancaster, Warwick, Birmingham, Nottingham, East Anglia etc. Looking at your A levels I think Exeter might actually be worth looking into as it is a very strong university for humanities subjects such as English and History
