I'm just wondering what do the two different r's(R and r) represent? And why do we need two different radius's?

The torus is like a straight sausage of circular cross section, wrapped end to end to form a larger object whose centre line is a larger circle. is the radius of the cross section of the sausage, is the radius of the circle through the centre line of the torus.
