Same as for any other May Ball, really. It should really be long, and bringing a shawl is probably a good idea if the weather looks iffy.

There will be people in hideously expensive dresses, but equally people in TK Maxx ones, so she should just go for whatever she can afford/will be happy with.
Something big, puffy, and glamourous.

It's considerably easier if you're a bloke! That said, I'm buying the gf a necklace to go with the dress and so need to find something to match...

I reckon lots of people will be wearing floor-length, but others will be wearing long as in below the knee.

Helenia-- I'm wearing the same dress I wore to my Year 13 ball, is there anywhere that sells lots of shawls so that I could find one to match? (Didn't need one last year as it was indoors, but guess it might be a good idea for Clare...)

You might try the market, actually - there are loads of nice dress etc stalls at the moment. That or somewhere pricier like Monsoon/River Island etc. So far all my shawls have been gifts, so I don't actually know where they come from

As for length, yes, definitely below knee, and most people will be wearing ankle/floor length ones. I have pictures of my various ones from previous years if you want an example or two. Make sure your/her shoes are reasonably comfy though - nearly 12 hours in painful heels is a nightmare, trust me!

The pashmina man on the market has looooads of colours and they're all a fiver. You will need something- I was freezing last year and it kind of ruined the night. As did the heels. I've learnt my lesson!
My dress is mid-calf length. I'm fat too short to go floor length- I'd be swamped!
Thanks
