PLEASE HELP!! :s PHARMACOLOGY TO PHARMACY.. HOW??

Hi, I have decided I really want to do a pharmacy course, but the only options I have available is to do the course with a foundation year, meaning appy next year or do science a levels. But I dont really want to do this.
So can I do a foundation year for pharmacology and then transfer to the pharmacy course?? But how would I do this the end of my first year, and then would i go onto 2nd yr mpharm or 1styr mpharm? also is this possible to do?? PLEASE HELP AS I AM VERY :s thanks

I don't think there are any sort of access to pharmacy courses and I doubt any unis accept tranfers from other courses straight into the second year of pharmacy.

Why can't you just do the pharmacy A levels in a year instead of pharmacology for a year? Either way you are losing a year out of your life.

There are, but very few e.g kings, cardiff, I don't think its possible 2 so aslevels and a2levels in a year, as most 6th forms or colleges don't do this! :s-smilie:

Oh yeah Cardiff does have a foundation course, had forgotten about that. In that case it really can't hurt to apply? Do you already have other A levels which aren't sciences?

yes, but should i apply for pharmacoogy then do a transfer later onto the pharmacy course? :s-smilie:

my mate did 1 year of pharmacology bcoz he never had A-level chem and has now applied to do pharmacy in the same uni - he should be joining the MPharm year 1

I know someone who had not so good A-level grades for pharmacy and went to do 3 years of pharmacology and is now has just done their first year of pharmacy. I think you would have more chance if you completed the whole pharmacology degree then changed to pharmacy, but that would potentially be a waste of time.
portsmouth uni - acheive at least a 2.1 average in your first year p'cology and you can transfer to 1st year mpharm.

My advice would be dont do a degree before going to do pharmacy degree. If you do you will probably find that most of what you do in pharmacy you have already done and will get quickly bored of the course. Get some science ALevels, or Licoln uni do a foundation year certificate that enables you to go and do pharmacy, http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/home/courses/fabs/foundation/certificatescience/index.asp .

Uh no. If that was true there'd just be a top up year for people with 3 year pharmacy related degrees (e.g. pharmcol, pharm sci). Pharmacy brings lots of things together. I highly doubt that doing a pharmcology degree you'll have done most of a pharmacy degree.

OP - my advice would be get in touch with admissions tutors from the unis you're interested in, tell them your situtation and ask them what the best route would be for you to take.

Your right there are some new things like law, pharmaceutics and pharmacy practice. But the majority of a pharmacy degree is pharmacology, after all you need to know how the drugs work. On my course there are lots of people with previous degrees and some with degrees in pharmacology, ok they are pretty good when it comes to pcol but they tell me they are pretty bored with the course.

Hi there I am in the same situation done my alevels and wanting to apply for pharmacy. I will be taking the A-levles required in 2 years as my college dsoent allow them in one year.Im doing this as it will not only open doors to pharmacy for me but many more. Also by taking this option I do not have to leave home as I am not ready to do at the moment. Also the alevles which i have done now I can use the UCAS points I have earned, so they wont go to waste. For you I suggets you work out the advantages and disadvatanges of your two routes and decide which one is better for you.

by the way what alevels have you taken

feel free to PM me if you need any more advice

Well not really. I'm not saying it's not important as obviously knowing how a drug works is paramount to being a pharmacist ... but overall it's probably a quarter of the degree ... maybe a bit more if your research specialisation in the 4th year is pharmacology obviously.

Well this year (2nd year) Ive had one module on pharmaceutics, one on microbiology and two on pharmacology. Anyway im not gonna get into an argument I was just saying if you end up spending three years of your life doing a pcol degree then face another four years of pharmacy you may well become disillusioned by the end. I know at my uni it is possible to do a year of pharmaceutical sciences then transfer to first year pharmacy (if your grades are good) so its possible some unis might offer the same chance but on a pcol degree, its best to check with admissions tutors.

Pharmacy is a good job but I sure as hell wouldnt spend anymore than the five years that I need to do it. Unless pharmacy is what you really, really want to do I would find the quickest route into pharmacy, and avoid doing a full degree.
I think if you've already spent 3 years doing any degree that unless you're actually in love with pharmacy you'd be like that *LoL* especially cause it's not an easy degree!

Yeah. Ive got lots of friends who are post-grads, one is a fully qualified podiatrist doing pharmacy. If its what you really wana do thats great. But sometimes I feel the job isnt worth 5years of my life, but sometimes I do.

Are you at uni then? If so how are you finding it?
Nah I graduated in July =)
