Talya's Year Long Headache Saga

After a year and a few months of having a headache which my GP thought might be sinusitis I finally got an ENT referral. However, the consultant seemed pretty adamant I didn't have sinusitis but is giving me a scan anyway (no idea how long I will be waiting for this).

In the meantime, however, he mentioned I may just have 'chronic facial pain'. I've just googled this (I thought he was making it up) and apparently there is not treatment for this, I just have to live with this...

Does anyone else have a chronic pain condition? Should I be seeing a psychiatrist instead of just seeking medication? If anyone knows anything about chronic pain I'd really like to hear about it.

I was pretty crushed when he said it wasn't sinusitis as I'd been led to believe it might be this and I knew it was treatable... now I might have a condition which isn't treatable or managable I am a bit sad :frown:

:frown: Try not to get too down about it, it hasn't been diagnosed yet so there is still hope!

Fingers crossed it isn't the chronic facial pain, and it's something treatable

Sorry to hear about that, it is really horrible thinking you know what it is and then finding out its something else.

It's funny you ask about the chronic pain. I have had kidney problems for a few years and it was always put down to infections even though they haven't always found bugs. I've had to push for a referral because i'm in and out of hospital but they never follow me up. I decided to take matters into my own hands when we were having a lecture about kidneys by a specialist and i went up and asked her about my symptoms.

She gave me the name of a condition i'd never heard of, and so i've been researching it and it adds up tbh. It is a chronic pain condition called Loin Pain Haematuria Syndrome. There isn't a cure for it and from what i've read it can become quite debilitating for some people.

I can't imagine having a headache for over a year. That is awful :frown:

Some of the websites said it can be linked to depression. I've never considered myself depressed, but I'll make sure I don't get depressed cause I imagine it will only make the pain worse.

Also it says not being able to open your jaw is a symptom and indicates you have tension in the facial muscles (which may be causing the pain). It suggests some exercises so I am going to have a go at those, and also start a pain diary.

No offence but if it's stress it may not 'pass' for years, am going to bother my GP again on Monday seeing as the consultant was so sure it wasn't sinusitis.

I hope that you find that it's something you can treat. :frown: A couple of years ago I had a constant headache for 4 months and that was bad enough. I would stay away from the computer for weeks on end and I'd still be in pain and having less sugar in my diet didn't help.

This is the first I've ever heard of chronic facial pain.

There are ways of managing pain without painkillers which i presume your specialist will go over with you if thats what is diagnosed in the end. I wouldn't bug your GP, he/she won't know anything specific, its worth waiting until you have another appointment with the specialist!

The specialist is an ENT specialist who can't do anything for me if it's chronic facial pain. I am going to my GP to get referred to the correct specialist!

hmm i wonder if this is what my mother has. she suffers from migraines a lot, and when its not a migraine she'll have a headache all the time. she realised recently shes taking painkillers about 6 times a week, she got worried that she's addicted and has been slowly trying to cut down. i don't think she's ever been to the doctors for a proper examination of her headaches but i'm now thinking that it may be a good idea. interesting.

ouch! I get a lot of headaches but I really do feel bad for you - a year long headache must be awful :frown:. I hope it's treatable

Have you ever considered going to see a chiropractor? I know some people don't hold much esteem for them but I go to one once a month to get my neck re-adjusted. The bones are slightly out of place and it's causing my headaches. If it's a posture problem they might be able to help you correct it. Tis only a suggestion.

I hope you get better soon

Haha, I have bad posture.. My mum sees a chiropracter sometimes so I might make a visit in the summer hols when I am at home. I want to cover all my bases!

I'm having a massage tomorrow so I am hoping it might relieve some tension (Great excuse to have a massage  )

It was stress due to the fact i had loads of things going on @ that time. Not only that a new environment made mine worse and lighting. Now that im completely relieved of these issues, my headache passed. I was told to drink plenty of water. Obviously something isnt being diagnosed properly, so yes probably best you go and see your GP again.

seek a 2nd opinion/2nd doctor.

dunno if this is true but alot of ppl tell me not to sleep with my hair wet cause I would get headaches but I still do and I dun get headaches... but maybe if ur hair is wet when u sleep, then you should try dry it,

Haha, I do not sleep with wet hair

when i was getting headaches all the time, i ended up seeing a neurologist who told me it was "chronic daily headaches" (bad headache everyday, meant i got extenuating circumstances for exams etc) eventually they went away, partly due to painkillers and i think partly due to the chiropractic, acupuncture and massage treatment i had as well as a reduction in stress
headaches can be caused by so many things
good luck and i hope they find out the problem and are able to do something

Apparently these don't last for a year..?

Maybe I wasn't clear.

I have had head pain CONSTANTLY for the past year. I go to bed with it, I wake up with it. Sometimes it is worse (after I cried this morning I was in agony) but if I have a nap it resets itself.
