    this is the question:
    The energy of activation for the formation of CH3Cl is 16 kJ mol–1.
    Use this figure and your answer to (a)(i) to complete the reaction pathway diagram below showing the formation of CH3Cl from CH4 and Cl2.
    Show clearly the intermediate organic species and the final products.
    Indicate on your sketch the relevant enthalpy changes and their values.

    I know how to draw the diagram, but what is the intermediate of a free radical subsitution?

    the intermediate in the thing that is in between basically.

    so at the start you have CH4 and CL2 and this ultimately turns into CHCL3, the organic intermediate is the organic product formed from CH4 and CL2 which is (dot)CH3

    You have to set the mechanism out using the initiation, propagation and termination steps typical of a free radical reaction:

    Initiation: Cl2 --> 2Cl●

    propagation: CH4 + Cl● --> CH3● + HCl

    propagation: CH3● + Cl2 --> CH3Cl + Cl●

    termination: CH3● + Cl● --> CH3Cl

    (there are a variety of possible termination steps, as well as a variety of possible propagation steps)

    The organic intermediate is the CH3● free radical
