Apart from maths and FM, are any A levels better than others for maths? A friend's son is taking a vocational A level and ICT and I wondered whether it would be better to replace one of these with a more traditional subject.

The most important thing is that their son is really good at Maths. This is what's going to get them through the MAT and through the interview.

It would be unusual for an applicant not to take three or four "hard" A Levels and given the workload at Oxford it may be worth replacing one of them with a more traditional subject. On the other hand, the only A Level recommendations made by Oxford are Maths and Further Maths so as long as he's a gifted mathematician, I wouldn't have thought that having "softer" third and fourth A Levels would hold him back.

Definitely good to take a science, Physics in particular, though Maths and Further Maths are all that's actually necessary. Computing is very good also, though not so much ICT.
