What martial arts can I wear shoes in? (self defence interest)

Hey, I am long overdue for some self-defence training and would love to start doing a martial art or some sort of defence program but I do have problems with my feet and would really appreciate wearing orthotics in shoes whilst doing the martial art.

I like the look of aikido but I they seem to be really disrespected if you wear shoes.

Can anyone give me some guidance?

Hey there/ I do martial arts myself and have been for quite a few years (Karate, Muay Thai, Tai Chi). At my gym there are Kickboxing classes (I don't really consider that to be martial arts but more "keep-fit") and they seem to keep their trainers on in that so if you have that sort of thing at your gym or know of those sorts of classes then go for it.

Jeet Kune Do is another one wear students wear shoes.trainers I think.

Other than that you're really supposed to take your shoes off.

But don't forget, Boxing is considered a martial art in itself and as far as I remember, they wear footwear in that sport.

Lau Gar is a southern style of chinese kung fu. You can wear kung fu shoes/slippers whilst training if you wish.

Check out...

I advise that you speak to your sifu about wearing footwear beforehand... or at least explain why you wish to wear something on your feet.

All the best!

To be honest, in terms of self-defence training, you'd be better off wearing footwear anyway, as that more accurately replicates the situation you would need to use your techniques in. Many specific self-defence styles, such as combatives, wear footwear while training. It's quite a different experience throwing techniques in different types of clothing such as shorts/trousers, vest/jacket so if you get the opportunity to try them out, go for it!
