According to the reports this morning the "average English student" has student loans of £44,000 which could rise too £50,000 in the next few years.

If people are having their debts cleared after 30 years and also not having to pay them back until they earn £21,000 then this is just causing huge amount of debt to be passed onto the tax payer. The outstanding loan debt is £46bn and will rise to £200bn in the next 30 years - NAO

About 50% of students are not expected to earn enough money to repay ALL their loan.

If you think it is okay for the government to use tax payers money to clear £50bn of loans then you need to consider what that £50bn could have been better used for.
Interest payments to banks/other debtors for our £1.7trn debt?

Bad idea, no one likes the inevitable arms race that comes with it.

It's completely ideological, SF makes only such an insignificant part of total cost. Tuition should be free to begin with instead of shifting this burden on the taxpayer later

These figures clearly indicate that people are freely taking out huge loans and not paying them back and expecting the tax payers to clear the debt (as usual). Going to university is an investment in yourself and therefore going to university to do anything but increase the chance of getting higher paid employment is just stupid. Albeit if you go to study your passion and other nonsense people will use then you CHOSE to do that and SHOULD pay it back?

Why is it that some people can go study degrees which they KNOW would not increase their employ ability and then be allowed to leave their debt to the tax payer? Why are students who graduated and now earn £40-50k having to pay for their peers for their choice to go to university?

Student Loans should be made like normal loans where if you do not pay it back within a certain period then you will have High court enforcement agents taking your possessions away, why should student loans be any different too normal loans if they are taken out by choice?

If this reduces people going to university too study crap then its not exactly a loss to anyone as those students were already putting a strain on the economy by having their debts put onto the tax payers.

If you think it is okay for the government to use tax payers money to clear £50bn of loans then you need to consider what that £50bn could have been better used for.
No need to have an attack as this is a student forum and you may find yourself in a predicament. There should be cuts in benefits/foreign aid/defence rather than student loans.

SL should be completely abolished and we should stop funding so many people to go to university to study courses that cannot sustain themselves (except for traditional institutions and huge areas of science) instead of shifting it onto the tax payer, what sort of logic says small state but 'let's dump all this money on the taxpayer' - Incredible stupidity from the Tories as usual.

Would agree with cuts to foreign aid, not defence (as these are real jobs as well remember).

Benefits? Some people desperately need these, no one desperately needs student loans.

It's all about priorities and the Tories haven't got any.

Are you like six or something? Firstly we need to spend more with the increasingly hostile world we live in.
Secondly and most importantly, you haven't explained why we shouldn't take it from unpaid student loans.

Basically you're saying we should slash the UK's education budget by £50 bil? Yeah I'm sure that's going to go down well…

but what if people cant get a 21k yearly salary job ?
even if they try their hardest, its not always possible to get into a job that pays that
what if they graduate and then have an accident that stops them getting a decent career?

    Granted.

Go and take a normal loan and use those excuses to not pay it back - See if the debt collectors do not still take your car.
    i dont have a car
but i do have loans out and i do pay them back on time

Tuition fees are too high for anyone to pay back. If it was cheaper to go to university, the problem would be a lot smaller.

    i dont agree with that
who will defend our country if they makefurther cuts?
do you have any idea how many healthy and able soldiers they got rid of because of the cuts already made?

My reply was not even towards your personal loan circumstances.

And your last point has any relevance because?
how can you go on about students getting SFE loans when ur not even in university. how do you know you can afford the fees upfront to go uni, out of ur own pocket?
and IF you can, how do you know something wont happpen which means you cant finance it yourself anymore

Or we could offer free/very low cost tuition like almost every other country in Europe does as they recognise the benefits of a well educated population.

The Tories view educated peasants as a threat and would like nothing more than to price normal people out of university.

This does not even make sense nor does it answer the question in my OP.

    And this is bad because?
oooh so you are in a mood because you dont qualify so you come on to a student forum, bashing students for student loans.
    hahaha!!!

Everyone qualifies for the tuition fee though? Whether you take it or not is up to you..
so whats with the miserable thread then!!!
not everyone can afford to pay back so much. get over it.
    everyones circumstances are different

but i guess you plan on coming straight out of uni, straight into that high paying job you seem to think youl have and be able to pay back ur loan asap?
because its not gonna work like that mate. reality check needed
