gay people generally aren't big sportsmen - I struggle to think of many pro sportsmen in any discipline who are openly gay.

Reply 2

because any footballer who came out would be hounded by fans, and probably ostracised by their teammates.

Reply 3

gay men tend to be more feminine and less into physical sports from what i've seen.

Reply 4

do you guys know any gay footballers.?

I came across a funny post on another forum last week.

'here's loads of prem players who are g@ys

Tottenham used to have a whole bum crew - Sol Campbel, Steffen Freund, Darren Anderton, Nicky Barmby, Chris Armstrong, Matt Etherington are all simpering bufties!

Arsenal seemed to take over when Sol went there (surprise, surprise), with guys like Freddie L, Ashley cole, Jose Antonio Reyes (apparently the reason he was on the bench for ages before making his first start was because he got caught pre-game with Freddie in his mouth....), Robert pires, Sylvain wiltord etc.

They are a bit more spread around the league now, but there are loads more. For starters

James McFadden
Matty Taylor
Steve Finnan
Stewart Downing
Etherington
Big Sol

I reckon there's a lot of frustrated g@ys too, guys like Joey barton, Jermaine pennant (maybe he was converted inside?), craig bellamy.

The best story I heard tho (apart from the freddy/Reyes one) was about ronald de boer when he was at rangers. Apparently on of the sunday papers up here was bought off from publishing a story about Ronald having an affair with a baggage handler (male) from prestwick airport.'

Ashley Cole is a closet homo. :nn:

He likes to stick mobile phones up his bottom.

The one bloke that did come out killed himself after the abuse he got as a result. I can't see that being a big selling point for a gay man to come out in top level football.

Reply 10

Because they'd get hounded by fans and treated like crap by a lot of players.

It's the sad truth.

Justin Fashanu.

It's cos he was black, though.

Reply 12

Well done, you.

Reply 13

There's a racist problem in football, too. Not just a problem with benders.

Reply 14

Yes, but while it's pretty hard to be in the closet about being black (as it were), it doesn't have anything to do with the simple lack of top level footballers not coming out as gay, and despite all the giggling and lack of serious comment here (shame), I really do doubt it was because he was black. His brother is equally black and all.

I'm not saying racism isn't a problem, but it's not what's being discussed. And it's a shame so few seem to take it seriously.

ah well.

The oppisite fans would rip the piss out of them

there probably are gay players in the premiership, they just clearly don't feel that it's an issue, since it isn't. it's not like there's a survey "are you gay" before you join a club. there's just no need to advertise, apart from those with WAGs how would we know their orientation

Reply 17

Why is it when people take the mickey out of one's sexuality and not their skin colour? You are how you are.

Reply 18

It's pretty well known that Ljungberg is at the very least, a bisexual.

Reply 19

Since when did footballers start advertising their private life? (well, the majority of them don't ^o))

I think this is one of the main reasons why there isn't an openly gay footballer in the Prem, along with the abuse they'd get.
