I want to apply for a PGCE later in the year when the applications open for September 2017 entry. In the meantime, I am looking to become a teaching assistant for a year to gain some experience in teaching. However, I have no teaching assistant qualifications and most of the adverts I have seen require an NVQ (usually level 3). I have a first class degree in biology and would like to work with primary children, but I don't know if i can be a teaching assistant without these NVQ qualifications.
Has anybody else got a job as a teaching assistant as a graduate? Where can I find teaching assistant jobs for graduates?

You're better of volunteering in a place which can offer a job, if you get what I mean.. there is no harm in applying for those job posts though - and see if you can get an interview!

Just apply. Every post I have seen is 'NVQ or equivalent'. It might be that they decide they want someone with relevant experience first in which case start volunteering and try again in a couple of months but I know plenty of TAs (including me) who don't have an NVQ.

I've got a job as teaching assistant, and I graduated with a 2.2
There are plenty of jobs about for this position, PM if you want me to forward your details to an agency.

You can apply for Level 1 positions if there are any about, or you can apply to work with an agency who will place you in schools.
Read up on SEN and different strategies to deal with them and safeguarding. You could Google example interview questions.
I worked as a cover teacher for the academic year prior my PGCE. Invaluable! I attended at least 4 different TA jobs before a school approached me and offered me the job.
If you can find a school that will respond to volunteering, go for it. Most want DBS checks though and sometimes it's a case of who you know within a school who can get you in.
