On on of the pages of the Cambridge site it says term starts Tuesday 2nd October. Does this include freshers week or is that the week before?

Also, do student normally stay a few days either side of their normal term dates??

I'm trying to work out my accomodation costs.

Freshers "week" (few days) starts the Saturday before that Tuesday when you will all be expected to move in. Actual lectures start on the Thursday.

Most students normally stay at least a few days at each end, especially if they can only get parents to come at weekends. In my college the rents are for 10 weeks for Michaelmas and Lent (but everything is a week shorter for Easter) but to stay from the Saturday before the start of term until the Saturday after the end will only be 9 weeks, so many people choose to stay an extra week just for the fun of it, 'cos it's paid for!

and my College is 9 week rents, so it really does depend on the college.
Fresher's Week doesn't exist in the same way as it does at other universities. You'll generally come up on the Saturday or Sunday before term starts and have two or three days to move in and get settled before lectures and work start.

I moved in Saturday and had work (which I started to do straight away, because I was after all a new keeno) by Monday morning. My fresher's "Week" was thus two days long.
Is it not amazingly scary writing your first essays, etc, not knowing what the correct standard will be?

Yes, it is. For everyone.
So is Freshers' Week essentially less than a week?

Yes. I arrived on the Sunday, was given my essay on the Tuesday, and lectures started on the Thursday. There is no 'Freshers Week'.
Assuming you are living in college, your accomodation costs will stay the same whatever. You can stay in your room for the whole of term.

'Full' term is the period during which there are lectures/work http://www.cam.ac.uk/cambuniv/termdates.html
A week or 2 either side of that there is whole term, in which you can stay in your room. Most people stay a few days into whole term.

n.b. my college got all the freshers to arrive a few days before full term, and my supervisions didn't start till later the next week, so I got a full freshers week
