Do people actually work in the Finance sector for any other reason than high wage prospects?

I keep hearing more and more people who do a science degree, such as Chemistry or Physics at undergraduate for 3/4 years, then go into Finance. They seem to not be doing anything Chemistry or Physics related in their career. Why did they choose Chemistry or Physics when they were 18 or so, if their intention was to go into Finance anyway? Or, is this because their best subject was Chemistry/Physics, but the jobs for those subjects are limited in terms of high wage prospects, so they go into Finance?

Is there anyone who wants to work in Finance for any other reason than potentially earning lots of money?
Have you ever experienced racism/sexism at uni?
