If you're bored this evening and fancy watching a livestream of a NOAA expedition to explore a hydrothermal system around the Marianas Trench, you can watch it here!

Some absolutely incredible biology and geology here. They're currently going past a black smoker, it's particularly spectacular right now! They generally stream every evening (UK time).

So exciting! Spent about 3 hours streaming this last night and it was just (well, I say just, it was still pretty cool) endless pillow lavas but this is just extraordinary! A 20m high hydrothermal vent system...

Ooh right, I see. Yeah, I think I just heard one of the women explaining that. :'3 I don't think I'm appreciating how cool this may be, especially bc the commentators sound so awestruck over the presence of shrimp- which feels a little bizarre. But it's still really awesome to look at! ^-^

It's a video stream from a remote-controlled submarine which is currently exploring a hydrothermal vent system (super-hot mineral rich water surging out from the ocean floor) at a depth of about 3200m. The voices are scientists (biologists and geologists) analysing what they're seeing.

I think the really exciting thing is that in comparison to most ecosystems we're used to, this system is almost entirely independent of sunlight. Most of the energy in this food chain comes from chemotrophic bacteria rather than than oxygenic photosynthesis.
