without doubt, they prob dont do them in maths, probably just say u got full marks in paper, i know they do whether u got full marks and top in country for other subjects though.

I think only AQA do them and everyone who gets the top 5 UMS marks, eg 100, 99, 98, 97 and 96 out of 100, gets one. But I didn't get one and I'm almost certain no one in my year did either, so I'm not sure.

Top 5 letters are for everyone with the top five marks (UMS; not raw I'm pretty certain.

So if a GCSE is out of 360, and the highest mark received is 358, letters will go to anyone with 358, 357, 356, 354 and 353. This could be five people, it could be ten, or it could be one hundred. :p:

I agree. Whatever the top five UMS marks are (although I'm not too sure if they can be the same ie all 100/100), anyone who got those marks could get a certificate. So it can be hundreds. And if it is different marks, they could be say 100, 99, 98, 97, 60 (unlikely, but hey :P) anyone who got those marks would get a top 5.

Well, so I've heard.

EDIT: Ah, beaten to it by Susie :P

You raised a good point though- the top five marks might not be consecutive numbers; although it's not incredibly common due to the number of candidates, there could potentially be gaps between them.

As far as I know AQA only give letters to the top 5 papers in the country. My friend got two for English and German last year; she got 100% on both, and my teacher told me I'd missed the same score in English by 1 mark. So if it were applied to the UMS grading system, I would have recieved one as well. However they're done, they're very rare, so I'd concentrate on getting the A*s and As without worrying about it.

who gives a ****?

it's a letter, it won't sway your chances of getting into a university or college.

Reply 15

It would be amazing to get one though

I got one of these for French
To be honest, it's more to do with how the exam goes on the day and how much your teachers have prepared you for the questions where you'll potentially lose marks; you're kidding yourself if you think a couple of papers can make you one of the "Top 5 in the Country".
The whole thing's a sham anyway - out of 20 PE candidates in the year above my my school got "Top candidate in the country" and two "Top 5"s besides that.
What a joke.

Pottageb...u really believe that....

theres saying i got an A*

and then theres saying i got the highest A* in the country...swell huh?

but, i would like to get one...but then again i would like to get an A*...A* over a letter.i would take the A*

I think Cambridge International also does them. Dunno how they work though. Plus if you can get top of the world with CIE in addition to being top in your region (I think). I was competing against an estimated 2,315 candidates taking the same subject so who knows...

AS long as you get A* i dont think any uni or college or employer is going to give a *****!

Though yes it would be nice to get one, but im not bothered A* to B will do fine
