If you integrate with respect to y (not x). to find the area between y=1 and y=-1 (swapping these y values for appropriate θ values) on one side of the ellipse then you can find the area that is not shaded by doubling your answer.
Note that the area of an ellipse (you could use integration to show this) is , where a and b are the semi minor and semi major axes.
