Can't wait  Particularly the France trip, can practice my GCSE french. Is that slide still up in the tate modern?

No.

And lawyers are far from the only department who do a good freshers package or a good follow up through the year.

Probably **** since I don't really hear about theirs. The large departments like law, medicine/medical school and economics get their act together pretty well. Geography and SSEES as a faculty are sharp too.

There's still plenty of freshers week away from things done by your department. Law end up in the syndrome which kind of works against them, much like it is all year with medics, where they do their own stuff so much, they are sort of in their own world and get quite detached from the rest of UCL which isn't all that healthy in my opinion.

Anyway...

Yes... most departments do have a society.

But do they have money? Or people? Or better yet, both?

French are pretty decent too, through the year... I think. Not so sure about Freshers. It's already pretty saturated freshers...

So wait if we have our freshers week with the law society we won't really get the opportunity to meet people from other faculties. That's kinda lame.

Er, no. The department having money doesn't mean they pass it on to students to go spend as they please.

Put it this way, I don't hear of EE students getting subsidised to go on Eurostar trips to Paris (Economics) or have balls at 5 start hotels on Park Lane (Law), nor do I hear of them going on Thames River cruises (not that expensive but still, medics, law, ssees etc.) and for manpower, they can't manage to hit every hall in freshers week to physically round up people for their events (geography - and I think they should be really proud of doing that because really, students are pretty lazy about a lot of things).

It is true that money isn't everything when it comes to getting a society and in fact, people is by far the biggest thing, but I think the above paints some of the picture of where momentum currently lies.

That said, there are literally, hundreds of things on during freshers week and much of it is spontaneous.

Nah just go along to your selection of activities from the Law side and the General pool, as it were.

It's much more of an issue if you don't get to meet the people in your hall early on because tight social circles form pretty fast. Which is fine if you bond with the lawyers actually and very many do. They have a great time and there's nothing wrong with that  But their freshers package strikes me as so complete and full that it does sort of leave you facing a slightly awkward and early choice you aren't so obviously aware of.

For law and UCLU events, you normally have to buy into the event before you get to uni.
