Royal Navy Officer

Hi, I've searched the site but there seems to be nothing about Navy careers on here (plenty about the RAF). I'm strongly considering a career as an Air Engineering Officer in one of the forces. I've been looking at the Navy and came across the following:

"University Cadetship

This scheme is for people who really want to get on in the Royal Navy and you will start university or college as an officer. You are paid a substantial salary for each year of your study:

1st year £11,337
2nd year £13,016
3rd year £14,615
4th year £15,954
You will complete one full year of Naval training before beginning your degree course. This consists of two terms at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and a period of time at sea."

Has anybody applied for this before or even have any experience of the Admiralty Interview Board? Any info would be much appreciated, thanks.

sounds interesting, re for more info, is that for engineers and doctors exclusively? i assume they'll assess how useful your degree is in relation to your applied branch, but can you get away with say an arts degree, not a degree in art but maybe one in philosophy or history?

Well, it would appear as though it's for any officer position, but I assume the degree you're intending to study will be relevant to your job in the navy.

Hi,

University cadetships are as rare as hens' teeth but there are those who get them. If you're going for engineering, you'll stand a very strong chance of getting a £4000 engineering bursary and your tutition fees paid. There are some restrictions on where you can study. This website explains it better:

The Interview Board is there to assess your intelligence and leadership skills. You need to go through your past and look at examples of when you've taken the lead, when you've been led and think about what it's taught you. Make sure your mental maths is very quick. I'll write more when I've been to sleep. How I love night shifts.

Good luck with everything
Sophie

Cheers Sophie, it sounds just like OASC and Sandhurst I guess. I know a fair bit about DTUS but I'm not sure that I want to go off to Uni straight away and a gap year in the military would be great. I'm going to go to the AFCO on monday and talk to the guys there about it. I want to study Aeronautical engineering at Uni at either Cambridge, Loughborough or Southampton (amongst others) anyway.

I don't think that finding examples of leadership should be too hard. Im a Cadet Sgt at the moment in the ATC and I'm hoping to get Flight Sgt by the end of September. I suppose things like rugby team captain and senior prefect at school would help too.

I have a UC friend who is Warfare. Not many UCs are given out/year but if you do well and get one you are sorted for your life at Uni.

You basically do Dartmouth in your gap year then join univeristy where you have to become part of your URNU (University Royal Navay Unit) which is a bit like the UAS and OTC (but more like the UAS but with sailing in lieu of flying, although you can go on flying camps). You hold Officer status on the URNU having been thorugh and graduated Dartmouth. There are a few on here who have been to AIB. If you want any more UC info PM me and I'll find out the answers to your questions - if you get one you are sorted throughout uni! The Navy pay your uni fees etc.

I was going to apply for UC, went to the AFCO and they told me that they give out 1 or 2 a year and that you have to be looking at oxbridge or other high status uni's. To be in with a chance they have to view you as the next potential 'high flyer' that could easily make it to flag officer rank. Don't let this put you off, its just an insight.

I have passed AIB and have contributed alot to both this website and others in terms of advice. I will link in a sec...........

Went to the AFCO today and spoke to a RN Air Engineering Officer. He rekons the Navy gives out 3 cadetships per year but said that it shouldn't discourage you because you'll still be considered fo the DTUS or other sponsorship schemes.

He also said that doing a BEng degree was preferable to MEng as that's all that the RN requires, but if you really want to do the MEng course you can still get the sponsorship for the last 3 years and to go to the AIB during your first year of university.

Congrats on passing the AIB for Aircrew Blimy and thanks for the links, very useful.
