Dizziness/shaking - any thoughts?

Once in a while I get something which initially feels just like it's a big head-rush. I get really dizzy and start shaking, at which point I usually let myself down onto the floor, or lean on whatever's nearby so I don't fall, and I don't know, it's like some sort of light convulsing. My vision goes blurry, and I'm aware, but not 100% aware of what's going on. Sometimes I don't get it for about a month or more, but sometimes I get it a few times in one day. It lasts roughly 10-20 seconds I think. I'm 16, I used to smoke, but I quit about a year ago, I'm female, I'm quite thin, and as far as I know I don't have any medical issues. And no, I'm not looking for a diagnosis, just some sort of idea about what's going on. Tell me to go to the doctor if you really think I need to, but please also tell me if you have an idea about what's going on. Mostly because I really don't like the idea of going to the doctor.
I haven't really noticed much of a pattern in it, but I think it happens more often when it's hot, though not always.
Thanks x
Shaking and dizziness can be linked with diabetes and sugar levels. I recommend you get checked out at the Dr's for this.

Don't suppose it happens when you stand up from being in one place for ages? Thats fairly normal, my doc recommended me plenty of water as it happens increasingly if your dehydrated.

You might be right there, but I thought that it was normal with the head-rushy bit, people often get them. It was more the shaking etc. which made me worry a little, but I will try that.
Might you have low blood pressure? I have that and it makes me really dizzy/fragile at times...There was a point last year where I couldn't get out of bed for a while without falling over and I used to faint suddenly at least once a week :s-smilie:
Yep agree with the other posters...i have low blood pressure and i get really dizzy and shaky, also have low sugar levels and when they go too low or too high i get really shaky and dizzy. Your best bet is to go see a doctor just to get a proper diagnosis and some tips on how to stop it

Like you I am otherwise fit and healthy and I get these too. Im also thin. I have EXACTLY the same thing happen. Slightly disconcerting.
Ive never been to a doctor before regarding this problem.

I am pretty sure it has to do with low blood sugar levels though. My dad has low blood sugar levels and very low blood pressure (he has the opposite condition to diabetes..he has to drink condensed milk when he works a lot...but this is due to over exerting his body in his teens whilst swimming for France).
Ive noticed that I used to get the spin out when I was really stoned (weed lowers blood sugar levels) and at a muse gig when I as severely dehydrated/low on energy after carrying girls on my back whilst dancing for an hour and a half.

So yeh. Just ensure you're eating enough carbohydrates and if you spin out get some sugar down you and drink some water.
Like everybody else said, could be low bp and/or diabetes.

If you are perfectly healthy, it is still possible to get faint/dizzy spells if you stand up quickly, or go from lying to standing quickly, its called orthostatic hypotension. Basically all the blood pools in the veins of your legs under gravity when you stand up, reducing your bp and it takes a while(10-20secs-ish) for your heart and brain to compensate.

The best advice would be to go to the doctor.

Does sound familiar! Thanks

i put my money on diabetes. my brothers diabetic and if his blood sugar drops low he will start shaking / and or vision will go blurry.

id recommend you check with a doctor. they will do a simple blood sugar test and will be able to tell you if thats what the problem is.
Wait wait wait. Diabetes (type 2) is characterised by HIGH blood sugar levels. If, like me, this girl is thin and eats a good diet then it is highly unlikely it is diabetes.
My symptoms are EXACTLY the same as hers and there is no chance I am diabetic. I eat an almost perfect diet and lead a very healthy lifestye. Low blood sugar level could be a cause...

I am thin and I think I eat a fairly good diet - McDonalds is the devil as far as I'm concerned  . I'm also vegetarian, I don't know if that's relevant. I don't do any regular exercise (I. hate. jogging. :p: ), but I'm not unusually unfit, I don't think.
Happens to me a lot, as you described, often when I stand quickly or yawn. For me, it's to do with my blood pressure, but there are other possibilities, so it's best to go to a doctor, who can refer you to a neuro or cardio to get a better idea. I had to do a 24hr ambulatory ECG and stuff, it may be wise to ask about that.

And what about Type 1 diabetes? I too am thin, eat an "almost perfect" diet and lead a healthy lifestyle, yet I have diabetes. When my blood sugar drops too low, I get shakey, but this isn't for "10-20 seconds" - it goes on until my blood sugar rises again after eating something.

Just got a 24 hr 3 channel ambulatory ECG done - looking for arrythmias. If it were to do with blood pressure then it would be a 24hr blood pressure recorder.
Definitely go to a Neurologist - symptoms sound more likely to be neurological - diabetes would produce more consistent symptoms, and would be accompanied by far more obvious markers - palor of the skin, ketones on the breath, a need to urinate constantly, terrible headaches etc - shaking only occurs in extreme hypoglaecemic episodes which would last more than the time periods you indicated. I had a contrast MRI of my brain and c-spine.. the scan is a pain - boring.. cold.. noisy.. you can't move at all.. and if you're claustrophobic then I could imagine it being quite scary.
Shaking could also be indicative of endocrinological problems.. well it could be to do with a great many things - you really need to do some preliminary blood tests to rule out obvious things.

OK. So it sounds like I should get it checked out? Should I wait until next time it happens or what? (thanks again!)
