You won't necessarily be allowed one.

Technically i wasn't allowed one, but i had one anyway, fantastic! When i didn't want to get up some days, milk from fridge, cereal, job done!

I asked for one and got it for £56 for the year

I had one. Made too much noise, couldn't sleep. Sure you could turn it off during the night provided what's in it won't spoil (keeping drinks cool), but are you really going to remember to turn it back on a couple of hours before you want a cool beverage?
I had one. Completely worth it.
Maybe that's because food kept getting stolen from the main fridge by drunks though

A lot of universities don't allow them, although if you're nice to your cleaner - if you have one - then you should be fine.

They're OK, and I know some people who benefit from them, but to be honest they tend to be more hassle than they're worth. They're noisy, and steal space, not to mention that when you move out of hall you're unlikely to want it in private accommodation due to the electricity bill...

I had one and really liked it especially when I was hungover and couldn't be bothered to move very far!
I'm deffo looking into smuggling one in, can't afford to have my milk and stuff nicked!

in exeter you get one with the room free so i'd say it's a good idea

Unless they've changed it since I went around Exeter, that depends on the hall you're in.

Here's the best way to test if you can cope with a mini-fridge at uni.

Capture a fly (two if possible) and put them under a glass, along with a microphone plugged into your PC, and record for at least two hours.
Save it as an MP3.

Now put this on your MP3 player, and try to sleep with it playing loudly in your ears. If you can easily get to sleep with a loud annoying buzzing, then you will be fine with a mini-fridge.

However, if you feel like you want to rip your own eardrum out through any available orifice, and will immediately destroy the next buzzing-item you encounter, then you might want to reconsider your decision to buy a mini-fridge.

If you don't want it in private accommodation after one year then sell it on to another fresher, simple. Most unis forbid them 'cause it's an electrical hazard, but do precious little to enforce it. It will be noisy, but it'll keep your cold food cold. Your choice, really.

lol do you really think it's that bad?! I don't even notice it anymore!

Can you get mini fridges that don't buzz, or at least do so very quietly?

Only on special order from the Department of Stealth at MI5, I'm afraid.

Ha Ha. Bugger! How cool would it be if MI5 sold fridges though? I'd be a bit worried about national secruity but I'd have a silent mini fridge so I'd be blissfully happy. Never mind, looks my dreams will never come true.
It might be worth investing in a cool box with freezer packs - that will keep drinks cool. (Though milk only for short periods of time.)

There is also a way round the mini-fidge noise - there is a cool box for about £30 which can be plugged in - it is essentiallya mini-fridge just without the noise and is a lot smaller.
