Hi. This is a quick question.
I am doing A2 chemistry and I am looking to get an A*at the end of this year
However I am worried about my EMPA performance and by how much this may bring my grade down. I obtained an A in my AS level and and A in my AS EMPA last year. All I ask is whether or not I can still obtain a high A/A* in chemistry with a D/C in my A2 Chemistry EMPA or whether this is unrealistic.
    Thank you x

The only way to get an A* at A-Level is to get 90%/an A* overall in all of the A2 modules

To get an A you gotta have 480/600 UMS (80%), Assuming you got at least 240 UMS in AS (A) - that means that you will need at least 240 at A2 level to achieve an A overall.

So; If worst case scenario you only achieve 60% (C) on your EMPA that will mean you will have gained 36 UMS points, meaning that you will require at least 204 UMS points to still get an A, CHEM 4 & CHEM 5 each carry a maximum of 120 UMS points, so if you get at least 85% on your CHEM 4 & 5 you will still get an A. This is only spit-balling as chances are you will have more than 240 UMS at AS so that will help you out (Still no reason to assume the worst and want high marks).

Basically, if you think you've done crap I'd be looking to go for 90%+ on both of those papers which is very doable seeing as you have one month to go. CHEM 5 is a very good paper to score UMS on, 75%+ is an A and 90%+ is almost full marks.

That is not true. You could get an A* at A level having scored 0 in the AS Science practical unit. For an A* you need:
    • At least 480/600 UMS overall
    • At least 270/300 UMS from the A2 units. (As the EMPAs are out of 60, you could get a low D (30/60) on the A2 EMPA and still get an A* - if you got full marks on the other 2 units.)

Sorry for not being 100% clear. I meant that you have to get the equivalent of an A overall for the full A-level which is 480 UMS and have to get 270/300 which is the 90% I was talking about in the A2.
