So how exactly are GCSE scripts marked?

All I know is that they get sent off and then get marked by examiners/moderators...

Are they posted to the examiner's house or the board's centre?
Are they marked by hand or are they scanned then marked online?

Are they only marked based on one's final judgement or does each script undergo thorough revision of marks from different markers?

I'm so curious about this situation.

I think that they are mainly scanned, and then marked online.

What they do is each script is marked by a maximum of 7 exminers, then they are finally given a final mark by the geif examiner who has the final grade bounderies, they are then taken to a meeten where thye are added up the scores and done. so 8 exminers in total mark each script so one might give it a b the other A* then they are moderated to give an average.
We were told, though this is CCEA board, that a computer sorts them randomly and places them into piles. The examiner then collects them, takes them home, marks them, places them back at HQ where the results are then entered into computer.
Bexiness!

lol no way
8 exminers have to mark them so that the grades can be averaged out, and moderated if only 1 person marks them its hard to find an average.

For some exams, I heard they get scanned in then sent off to examiners, but the paper is separated so that one examiner only gets 1 question to mark (Makes sense, it'll go much quicker if they know all the answers to that question :P) and it gets put together at the end.

There was a video I saw on the AQA website that showed two people in front of a computer screen marking someone's science paper... so I guess it's probably not just one person marking it.

Yeah they are scanned, that's why they have bar codes on the papers and you can only write in a certain space where the scanner scans so the examiners must mark them on the computer. :s-smilie:
My history teacher actually told us on friday (the day of history exam) that the exam paper was going to be scanned and sent to the exam ready for the next morning
So I think they get sent pretty quickly, scary...

no no no all wrong they get moderated by many exminers thats where your grade bounderies come in, if 6 out of those 8 exminers mark people who have done not good then the moderation comes in,
On the AQA video I remember they showed the examiners scrolling through the science paper on-screen, and the question was about acid rain and was like 4 lines long and the candidate had written in really messy handwriting:
"It makes it acid rain"

Where are these videos? I'm curious to see them.
Why is it you can't write on the pages they tell you not to write on? Sorry, this sounds stupid. You know those pages that say do not write on this page. Why is that? Is it because it will mess up the system or something if you write on those pages or is it because it doesn't get scanned in?

Probably wont get scanned in :P Or it's to see if you can follow some simple instructions, preparing you for later life
