I understand that to achieve an A* grade overall, we need to get an A grade overall as well as 90% + average UMS across LT3 and LT4 (coursework and exam).

Now I've checked the UMS/grade boundaries - and to get the required 180/200 UMS average in A2 for the A* grade we can drop roughly 7.5 RAW MARKS. 20 UMS = 7.5 RAW MARKS?!

I got 37/40 on the LT3 coursework (albeit yes, this has not been moderated), meaning I can drop around 5 marks in the exam to hit the A*... Dropping 5 marks in an 80-marker closed-book exam seems very harsh, no?

Just in comparison, in my Edexcel History, I can still get full UMS in my exam even if I drop around 10 marks in a 70 mark exam paper?

Can someone explain if I have misunderstood - this seems excessively difficult relative to other A Levels

I was surprised myself as it is pretty hard to get A* with such high grade boundaries.

Yeah it's crazy. I scraped it with 38/40 raw marks in the coursework and 74/80 raw marks in the exam. The problem is that all one needs to do for very good marks is follow the assessment objectives closely, write in a decent fashion and remember quotes. Easier said than done, but obviously lots of people manage it and it pushes the boundaries up.
