Why do I only get depressed at night?

I'm not talking about feeling 'a bit sad', I'm talking about feeling weepy, alone, irritable and sometimes even suicidal. Like I'm surrounded by a dark bubble and I'm trapped. I often find it hard to sleep and I'm unable to do anything but sit and cry.

However when I wake up the next day these feelings are gone.

Is there such a condition as 'nocternal depression'? I've googled but I cant find anything.

Could this be down to diet? Or something else?

Most probably down to things playing on your mind. Are you getting much sleep at all then and are you worried about something or missing something?

PM for a chat if you want.

How long have you been feeling like this? Coz when I was only mildly depressed, I felt the same, I would be almost totally fine during teh day, but once it gets to the night, I changed totally, I woudl feel really down and wouldnt wanna do anything but sit there and wanting to cry etc. I think it mihgt be worth of making a trip to see your GP before it gets too late, like me... I hav ebeen getting far worse since, and I have not been able to do any of my normlay duties for more than 2 months now. So really, get yourself checked, it might not even be depression, it could just be a problem of your diet, but I am not a doctor, so I cant tell.

It's funny that, because I am exactly the opposite. I feel more alive at night.

I think you are definitely describing depression though. One of the symptoms of depression is it occurs at a specific time, as funny as it sounds. (By specific I could mean day or night or something more narrow).

p.s. it's spelled NOCTURNAL depression. Look that up

Could it be insomnia manifesting as depression?

If you can't sleep, get up and do something (have a drink, read a book etc) rather than worrying about not being able to sleep.

If you're stressed out about stuff, try worry dolls! They worked for my sister. Entirely psychological of course but worth a go.

Have a bath before you go to bed to relax you.

I get it too, though not to that extent.

It may be because you're kept busy during the day (what with your gym and all), and it's not until night-time when you've got a chance to wind down that you have time to think more, and it's this that leads to your depression.

Any time you're upset my lass, give me a shout. You know I'm up every night and I#ve got two good working ears and eyes. :hugs:

I've been feeling this way since I can remember. Even my childhood was like this (and I'm now 24). Often there is no reason for my sadness. But it always feels very intense.

Have you ever seen the doctor about it? If not, go.

A quiet time at night gives you thinking time and too much is not good for you. Try keeping yourself more occupied at night.

Hmmm. You sure? I have definitely seen that phrase in my travels...

Is that every night?

EDIT: Oh my goodness, you're right  It does exist as a term though, I'm pretty sure.

got it.
i dont mean to prive, but as i roam the fitness forms alot i know your on a diet and are pretty into it. strict with your cals and exercise.
let me tel you now from my own experience, theres a heck of a good chance its down to your diet. a year ago i very much got into weight loss, and eventually it got out of hand. i dropped to low, didnt eat enough and did way too much exercise. this went of for a good few months and depression came along with it towards the end and continued for a long time after until i admitted i needed to put weight on. it starts of great, you lose weight, feel great about yourself and naturally due to all the endorphins but when you go too far things go the complete opposite. i think things have gone too far for you.
i didnt get rid of it untill i put on a good stone but im still pretty skinny but it was enough to sort out my mind. and now im absolutely fine again(could do with a bit more muscle though and will get it).
just think about it properly, i really do believe its down to your diet especially if you havent experienced these feelings before you went on the diet?(like me).

Yup. They put me strait on pill after pill after pill since I was 16.

I recently became pill-free because I was sick of the side effects.

Hmmm  I'm not underweight. An I have a bodyfat percentage of 22% (checked yesterday :proud: ). I also eat healthy food and exercise daily. I thought exercise helped with depression? It works for me during the day. But at nighttimes my whole mindset changes.

I remember when I was on them. Take a good while once your off them and substained useage of them shouldn't be advised.

Have you tried going to bed earlier or do you lie awake?

Maybe you just don't like being alone and night time is when you are totally alone. Unless of course you alone in the day too, in that case I have no idea.

yeah it definatley does, but when you become underweight or lose too much weight too quickly everything changes, its like, list all the positive things about exercise and a healthy eating lifestyle and when you go to far they all become the complete opposite.
whats your stats? bmi, wieght and height if you dont mind.
if your confident that your physically fine and in good shape then no worries.
i just wanted to point out that it could be a factor as i went through a similar phase.

what is a worry doll?

isn't it just the fact that it's quiet and you have nothing to distract you from your thoughts. And you're tired so your usual coping mechanisms don't work as well. Quietness adds to lonliness adds to depression...
