The PhD programmes I'm applying to have two main deadlines - one in November/October then one after Christmas.

Is it advantageous to apply to the first deadline (so applying in November as opposed to January)? Is it theoretically easier to get in this way?

You need to ask the university concerned why there are multiple deadlines - it might increase your chances to apply early or it might just mean you wait around longer for a rejection.

It's a CDT (Centre for Doctoral Training) so perhaps it has something to do with that? I think most CDTs have multiple deadlines. But yeah, I'll ask when I start fourth year. Thanks!

The deadline may reflect the start date but as said above it's best to ask.
