Seriously, I'm surprised someone who can't work this out even manages to put their socks on in the morning. :/

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...s-baffled.html

There were some people on a train.

19 people get off the train at the first stop.

17 people get on the train.

Now there are 63 people on the train.

How many people were on the train to begin with?
I do not understand how anyone can get this wrong.

No, it's 65 because it asks how many people were on the train to begin with, not now.

Oh my gosh I'm wrong!

It's 63-17=46.

But what about the 19 people that got off.

No, no it actually said that was the answer, when I looked on the article. (Because you ignore the 19 people that got off...that is what it says on the mark scheme apparently).

That isn't very logical, how can you ignore the people that got off and then ask how many people there were to begin with

Oh shhhhhh I'VE JUST WOKEN UP,OKAY?!

Perhaps in this question the mark scheme got it wrong & forgot about the 19 people.

Easily solvable with algebra...But it doesn't even require that!

19 people get off the train.
17 people get on the train.

So the "overall" or net change is -2

There are 63 people in the end left on the train.

So...if overall two people left...add 2 lol

The answer to the question is 65 according to conventional mathematics and language.

If the mark scheme says 46, the mark scheme is wrong! I think the article actually says that the mum who posted the riddle was on some online forum and someone claiming to be a teached posted that the answer was 46. I suspect either:

(a) the mum misunderstood the forum post
(b) the person on the forum was not a teacher
(c) the person on the forum was a teacher and wrong
(d) the mark scheme was wrong
