If I take a gap year after my first year will I still be eligible for student finance on my return and do you know where I can find more information on this?

Yes you'll still be eligible - ideally you should get your university to notify SFE that you'll be on a gap year so they can pause your funding and you can reapply without problems as a continuing student when you get back.

Your university are the best people to speak to about this.
