Silly question I suppose, but what sort of clothes do we take with us for things like the freshers' ball, and all these formal dinners I keep hearing about(well, yes, dressed-up type clothes...but just how dressed up?) How often do they have formal dinners anyway?

At the open day we had a 'formal dinner' and people were wearing all sorts of things....seriously from those with jeans and t-shirts to the others in full 'night on the town' type get up. I suppose for balls and such like the dress code might be similar to that of a prom???
I looked kinda dressed up, I was wearing a black jesery type dress from Urban Outfitters so I wouldn't be cold teehee, and then I just hopped into my trusty trainers after (don't do smart shoes  ). The girl whom I shared the room with went in black trousers, a dressy top and a black suit jacket so we both looked smart just in slightly different things, I think it was more down to what you were comfortable wearing.
I have nothing to do tomorrow apart from wash all my clothes.

My mum was asking this the other day so I went out and bought a whole load of outfits, just some skirts, casual-ish dresses etc. I figure just bring a variety of stuff and you'll be sorted.

guys : dj (used to it, we have one every other week at my school)
girls : some sort of dress (not used to this)
Yeh.. it's strange. I think I'd look so silly in my prom dress (my prom was held in a 6-star real gold-plated hotel resort ) coz' it's big, puffy and always gets stepped on lolz.

I'll just bring stuff that blends in like SweetSugar.... variety!

the amount of formal dinners depends on your college, at castle we have 2 a week, where as at one of the hill colleges, you could expect them twice a term!

i agree that men wear shirt and tie/dj and gown

Yey...look at me too...I'm a Full Member now!

Some of the Bailey colleges seem a bit excessive with their formals to me....Hatfield have 2 per week, but i'm presuming that we don't have to get really trussed up that often?!?
...I'm going to take a mixture of 'formal' stuff to be safe....a couple of prom dresses and some smart, but simple skirts and trousers.
...and don't forget the accessories...tis a great excuse to buy a few more bangles and bags!...an awesome way to smarten up any outfit

Hey Shilling!....2 formals a week at Hatfield will give you many spoon-nicking opportunities! But i'll be watching you :P

i dont think durham was in harry potter. it was alnwick, which is north of newcastle, but also has a castle, just like durham.

Don't think so. But i hate HP, i wish it had never been written. Not that i'm prejudiced against a woman making millions from an essentially flat story whose characters are so black and white that they might as well be in a low grade comic strip. Nyway, rant over.

Yeah the cathedral was used. You know that scene in the first one where its snowing and Harry is just standing with his owl on his shoulder? Ok thats a really bad description  but that scene was filmed at the cathedral I believe

Hmm.. I think it's very good for a children's book  Enid Blyton has "flatter" characters but I still think she's cool. But that's just the kid in me.
